Within the First Few Hours

What you need to do immediately depends on where the death has occurred:

  • At a Hospital or Care Facility: The nursing staff will notify the proper authorities and contact the funeral home on your behalf. You simply need to inform the facility that you have chosen Ferfolia Funeral Home.

  • At Home Under Hospice Care: Please contact your hospice representative first. They will arrive to officially pronounce the death and will then contact us to bring your loved one into our care.

  • At Home (Unexpected): Call 911 immediately. Emergency personnel will guide you through the next steps and notify the county medical examiner if necessary. Once they have cleared the scene, you or the authorities can call us.

Once you call us at 330-467-4500: We will dispatch our team to respectfully bring your loved one into our care. We will also ask for basic information and set a time for you to meet with one of our funeral directors.

Within the First Few Days

In the days following the passing, your primary focus should be on supporting your family and gathering the necessary information for the arrangements.

Steps to consider:

  • Notify Close Family and Friends: Reach out to your immediate circle. You may want to ask a trusted friend to help make phone calls.

  • Locate Important Documents: If possible, try to locate the deceased’s will, pre-arrangement documents (if they planned ahead), and life insurance policies.

  • Gather Personal Information: We will need specific details to complete the official death certificate.

  • Veterans: If your loved one served in the military, please locate their honorable discharge papers (DD-214) so we can secure their veteran benefits and military honors.

What to Expect When We Meet

Meeting with a funeral director might feel intimidating, but our goal is simply to listen, support, and help you plan a meaningful tribute. This meeting usually takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

What we will discuss:

  • Your Loved One's Story: We want to know about their life, passions, and legacy so we can help you craft a personalized service.
  • Service Options: Whether you prefer a traditional burial, cremation, a celebration of life, or a private gathering, we will walk you through your options and pricing with complete transparency.
  •  The Obituary: We will help you outline and draft an obituary to be published on our website and in local newspapers.

What to bring with you:

  • Clothing for your loved one (including undergarments and jewelry, if desired).
  •  A recent photograph for the obituary and cosmetic preparation.
  • The deceased’s Social Security Number and biographical details (parents' names, education level, occupation) for the death certificate.
  •  Military discharge papers (if applicable).

Take All the Time You Need

There is no rush to make every decision immediately. Our role is to absorb the logistical burden so you can focus on your family.

If you are in immediate need, or if you simply have questions about what to do next, please reach out. We are always here to answer the phone.
