Susan E. Chapman

SUSAN E. CHAPMAN (nee Franklin), age 90, passed away on November 16, 2024. Wife of the late Robert Dewitt Chapman and daughter of the late Edwin and Edythe Franklin. She is survived by her beloved daughter Jennie Vasarhelyi and son Chris Chapman; grandchildren Leah Vasarhelyi (spouse Alex Wilson), and Kayla Vasarhelyi; and sister Celia Harper (Marc). Susan grew up in Bayside in Queens, New York. As a young woman and throughout her life, Susan embraced independence and learning, graduating from Colby College in Waterville, Maine and studying abroad as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Paris. She met her husband while working at the Harvard Observatory Library. Together they moved to Los Angeles where both of their children were born. The family eventually settled in newly established Columbia, Maryland. Susan enjoyed a career as a librarian for the National Agricultural Library. She served as a role model for many in her family. She loved art, literature, and playing bridge. Susan will be remembered for her warm and loving spirit and the generosity she showed others.
