ROBERT W. “BOB” CHASE, JR., age 68. Bob passed away peacefully on Saturday, 11/2/24 after seeing his last visitor. Born on March 23, 1956, in Cleveland, OH, son of Robert W. Chase Sr. and Veronica S. Chase (Rakauskas). He leaves behind his wife, Jeanne (nee Viqmar) and son, Robert W. III, USMC (Carissa), and brothers, Jack (Nancy) and Bill.
Proud alum of St. Timothy School in Garfield Heights, Cleveland Central Catholic HS (class of 1974), Marietta College and Baldwin-Wallace College. Employed out of college at Parmadale Children’s Village in Parma followed by a career in law enforcement before retiring from the Bedford Police Dept. and as Team Leader, SWAT Division after 30 years of service. A member of of the CCC Hall-of-Fame earning seven letters in baseball (4) and football (3). A PD All-Scholastic, All-Conference, East-West All-Star, Bob was proud to play for a team that won 29 consecutive games over two years for coach Tom Pluto and (CCC HOF coach) cousin, Jerry Chase. He was also a 3 year starter at defensive back and quarterback. Bob always loved talking about his old teammates and coaches at CCC. Bob earned a scholarship to D-III power Marietta College, starting on the varsity as a freshman for Coach Don Schaly of the Pioneers, a team that boasted a 44-6 record his sophomore year. He was always grateful for the friends and teammates on his baseball and softball leagues (Jeds Tavern, Morgana Park, FOP and hardball 40+ year Roy Hobbs Hornke Painting).
Bob had a deep love for his wife, Jeanne, and son, Robert . Jeanne with loving steadfastness never left his side during his long illness. She ensured Bob had the best possible care for which the family is eternally grateful. Robert, his son, came home to help his Mom and Dad. Bob was so very grateful for their loving care. Bob’s happiest memories are spending time with his dear wife, loving son, family and friends. He was especially proud of Robert’s service in the USMC who followed in the footsteps of his grandfather (WWII.)
Bob was a sports enthusiast, a die-hard Browns and Indians fan, an avid reader of history, enjoyed riding his motorcycle, and devoting his time volunteering with his wife at various charities including St. Vincent DePaul, Toys for Tots, woodworking, the Young Marines and the VA. His knowledge of sports trivia was uncanny. He enjoyed challenging his brother, Jack, with arcane sports stats and other meaningless trivia.
Most importantly Bob was most proud of his deep faith, attending Mass daily. He went on to work security after retirement at Walsh Jesuit HS before fulfilling his dream of moving to North Carolina to be close to his son and Carissa. His dry, unique sense of humor and his amusing stories (to say the least!) will always be with us. We will truly miss Bob’s kindness, protection, and love.
Brother Jack is sorry (and somewhat amused) for all of the times Bob had to answer the question, “What the HECK is wrong with your brother Jack?!”
The family wants to thank all Bob’s friends who took their time to visit Bob in the hospital. The Bedford Policemen, and former SWAT members were truly outstanding in their devotion to Bob.
