JOAN CATHERINE PANSMITH age 90. Beloved wife of the late John Carl; loving mother of Patti Zimmerman (Blake), Susan (Mary Kay), John (Jamie), Amy Treend (Eric) and the late Noreen Collins (Brian, living); Nana of Katelyn, Marcus, Rudy, Ryan, Jenae, Alicia, Sean, Evan, Reed, Avery and Scott; great-grandmother of Ayla and Callum; and daughter of the late Oliver (Dick) DeYoung and Margaret (Helen) nee Behrens. Joan was born in Port Richmond, Staten Island, New York the only child of Dick and Helen. A graduate of Port Richmond High School, Joan went to work in New York City shortly after graduation. There she met the love of her life, John, and they married when Joan was just 19. Joan centered her life around family and raised 5 children. A fierce advocate for all her children, she was their champion throughout life. Her love and passion for family grew as she became the proud grandmother and then great grandmother. She could always be counted on for encouragement. Joan and John were married for 70 years. Joan was a devoted volunteer at Akron City Hospital (Summa) for 35 years. She could be found in the PACU supporting her beloved nurses. Joan loved to read a good mystery or historical novel. She had an amazing green thumb and was surrounded by flourishing plants wherever she lived. She will be sorely missed by friends and family.
