Matthew 25:23 “His Lord said unto him; well done, good and faithful servant; thou has been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.”

Harold Louis Nazareth, a Cleveland native, lived his life not by stride but by faith. He was a devout Christian, regularly attending Mass every Sunday and furthering his faith and knowledge through reading. He could recall every scriptural story off the top of his head and even give you what chapter it was from.

Harold proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1951-1954 when he was honorably discharged. During his time as a Marine, he earned the Naval Occupation Ribbon for his tour in Europe during a time of war. After being discharged, Harold began working as an electrician, retiring at the age of 80.

Harold’s faithfulness was also reflected through his love for his beloved late wife, Joan Nazareth. Uniting in marriage for 67 years, they had a love story that one could only wish to mimic. From family vacations to Myrtle Beach, to going to the grocery store, there is not one single activity that they did apart. He was her staunch and fierce defender, especially when it came to his wife’s cooking. Many have tried, and many have failed to get him to give them a 10/10 rating on a meal. His wife was able to do so with ease.

While our hearts are heavy, we feel at ease knowing that they are reunited with the Lord. He not only took on the role of a doting husband, but also a loving caregiver. Harold encompassed what it meant to be a father, especially when the task was not easy with not one but four daughters. From sled riding down steep hills to getting hot chocolate and donuts, there was nothing he would not do for his daughters. He was their biggest cheerleader, guiding them on their path in life, and helping to set them up for success. Having four daughters in the medical field was his greatest pride.

His grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew him as the fun grandpa. He was remarkably known for his next to near impossible easter egg hunts, because who hides an egg in the smallest cubicle in the basement? When he was not driving you mad to find eggs, he could probably be found in a dark corner, waiting to scare you. Though he was older, his age was never a reflection of his agility. The monkey bars, rock-climbing wall, you name it, he would do it. He was a lover of nature and history, and he made sure his grandchildren gained exposure to those same things as well. To him, knowledge was the most powerful tool one could have.

The stories, memories, lessons, and love we have for Harold will be with us for the rest of our lives. We will seek to find him on every sunny day, in every slight breeze, or bird that flies by. To Harold Louis Nazareth, we will love you forever.
