MARY JANE MAHAN (nee Gairdner), 95, a resident of Danbury of Hudson, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2026. Married for 31 years to Hal Mahan, former Director of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, where she volunteered for thousands of hours and helped to run the museum gift shop; Loving mother of five sons Mike (Joni), David (Karen), Chris (the late Shelli), Tom (Phyllis), and the late Eric (Amy); Devoted grandmother of seven grandchildren Jessica Mahan (Kelsey Grunstra), Lindsey Maggard (Joseph), Tristan (Shannon), Natalie, Taylor, Max, and Abby; Great-grandmother to Cameron, with great-grandchild Harvey James expected in September.
Mary grew up in Dearborn, Michigan. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Wayne State University and her Master’s degree in Zoology from the University of Michigan, concentrating in Entomology.
The family first lived in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan and Pepper Pike, Ohio then Mary moved to Solon, Ohio where she resided for over 30 years.
Mary was the quintessential naturalist and scientist, and she lovingly passed her skills, knowledge and wonder to all her children and grandchildren. Mary was endlessly curious and always eager to explore her world. She was an expert in insects, flowers and trees, rocks, and stars especially. Mary would teach all her family about everything from beneath the ground to the sky above, and all flora and fauna in between! She delighted in the beauty of Nature, her enthusiasm nurturing a deep commitment to protect and preserve our environment. Most of all, she delighted in her family. Through triumphs and trials, she was their biggest fan and most dedicated comforter. The world has lost a bright and loving light, though her radiance will continue to glow in their hearts.
Friends may call at the FERFOLIA FUNERAL HOME, 356 W. AURORA RD. (ST RT 82) SAGAMORE HILLS, where a memorial service celebrating Mary Jane’s wonderful life will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m., MEMORIAL VISITATION 10:00 AM UNTIL TIME OF SERVICE.
