Joan Kathryn
Roll
Mar 7, 1935 — May 2, 2024
Joan Kathryn Roll, of Sagamore Hills Ohio, died peacefully at her home on May 2, 2024. She was a model of kindness and grace to many over her 89 years.
She was born on March 7, 1935, in Buffalo, NY, to Thaddeus and Jeanne Kowal, and liked to say she was a raised "a saloon-keepers daughter". On December 26, 1956, she married her high-school sweetheart, Ralph Roll. Their long and loving marriage has been a true inspiration to their family.
After a career as a Dental Hygienist, Joan spent years raising their five daughters and being involved in civic and spiritual organizations. Throughout her life she also shared her artistic talents and green thumb - creating beautiful gardens, quilts, and stained-glass pieces, which grace her children's and grandchildren's homes. Once her daughters reached college age Joan earned a bachelor's degree at John Carroll University in Gerontology and worked as the Director of the Golden Age Center on the west side of Cleveland, enhancing the daily lives of the residents there.
Joan and Ralph loved travelling the country and the world. They spent their summers at Lake Chautauqua, NY for decades and gave their children and grandchildren amazing memories over those summers – time on the water, rousing games of charades, and gathering together to enjoy the amazing sunsets from their deck.
Joan is survived by her loving husband, Ralph Richard Roll; her children Monica Roll of Easton Maryland, Mary Lane (Gary) of Ijamsville MD, Jennifer Roll of Moreland Hills OH, Gretchen Ciccotti of Lyndhurst OH, and Claudia Roll of Severna Park, MD; her grandchildren Olivia (Justin), Matthew, Alex, Abby, Joseph, Samuel, and Elena; as well as her great-grandchild, Lana Joan. She is also survived by her sisters, Sylvia McGarry (Francis) and Claudia Rose Drucker (Bruce, deceased).
