Obituary

IGNAZIO “IGNATIUS” LOVANO; 96, Beloved husband of 63 years to Maria (nee Maggiore); Loving father of Grace Calabrese (Nick), and Marianna Fedik (Matt); Cherished Nonno of Giovanni Calabrese, Antonio Calabrese, and Michael Fedik: Predeceased by his siblings; Giovanni, Rosina, Giuseppe, Nicolino, Giuseppina, and Alfio. Dear uncle and great-uncle to many. Ignatius was a well-known barber for over 60 years. Upon immigrating to the United States with his beloved wife Maria, he started his own business with a one-chair Barber Shop on East 9th St. in downtown Cleveland, OH. In the latter part of his career as a barber, he worked at the Northfield Plaza Barber Shop where he officially retired on his 90th birthday. For many, Ignatius was not only their barber, but also an admired and loyal friend. There was a moment in Ignatius' life that was extremely near and dear to his heart. When he was 17 years old, he left Sicily to become a policeman in Northern Italy. During a celebration of a religious holiday procession, he was assigned by his commander to be the bodyguard for a cardinal, who after a few short months, became Pope John XXIII. The honor of being his bodyguard for an entire day, was later followed by him receiving an autographed photo of the event signed by Pope John XXIII and who ultimately in 2014 was canonized as a Saint.
