Obituary

AUDREY M. FISCHER was born in Chicago on New Year's Eve, 1935. She is the daughter of Joseph and Helen Zabella. She was raised on the southwest side of Chicago by a committee of women. The committee was made up of Audrey's mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and one aunt. Her father was killed in WWII in Liege, Belgium. Audrey attended a Catholic School where Lithuanian and English were both part of the curriculum taught by the Catholic Nuns. She had a natural gift for art with fashion design as a favorite subject. However, the committee had decided that nursing was a far better choice for practical purposes. She graduated from Loyola of Chicago's School of Nursing in 1958 with a B.S. degree. She met her future husband, Carl, while at Loyola. They both enjoyed ballroom dancing then, and for the rest of their lives. They belonged to the Shaker Heights and Northfield dance clubs.  They also belonged to a group of dancers that performed at retirement communities around the Cleveland area. Audrey and Carl were married in Joliet, Illinois in August of 1958. Shortly after Carl's graduation from the Loyola School of Dentistry he was inducted into the Army.  He was sent to the Army base in Giessen Germany. While in Germany, Audrey volunteered to supervise the operation of the Well Baby Clinic for American military personnel and their families run by the Red Cross. This was the beginning of a lifetime of volunteerism for Audrey.  Upon moving to Sagamore Hills in 1971, Audrey volunteered to be the School Nurse at St. Barnabas School while her sons Robert and Thomas were students there. She is the Mother-in-law of Stacey and Grandmother of five grandchildren; Robert, Gretchen, Sophie, Reece and Brock. Audrey has always loved gardening.  She was vice president of the Nordonia Hills Garden Club and one of the founding members. She also enjoyed golf, tennis, sailboat racing, skiing, crafting, knitting, sewing, needlepoint, decoupage, cooking and making buckeyes with her friends at Christmas.
